Report from Trinity’s Safety Team
February 2021

It has been a long year and we find ourselves still battling a coronavirus that has invaded the world and continues to infect thousands and end the lives of many people. There is good news and bad news, the good news is that the numbers are improving and the vaccinations are in the process. The bad news is that variant strains of the virus have found their way into the states and at least one seems to be more contagious, which really is to be expected because that is the nature of these kinds of viruses and the implementing of the vaccine is dreadfully slow.

Here is the bottom line for now, we are basically at status quo. Although the numbers are improving, they are still the highest per capita of all the large industrial countries, so here are some reminders.

●    Although some churches are conducting in-person worship, there is still evidence that in-person worship create super spreader events. Therefore, Trinity will continue to provide worship virtually for Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings during Lent. The ELCA encourages churches to continue virtual worship and advise that National and Synod staff continue to conduct business and meetings virtually.
●    A state mandate still calls for the protocols including mask wearing, social distancing and hand washing. It is also noted that the CDC now recommends that you double mask with a cloth mask over a surgical mask, if possible. The indication is that it improves protection by up to 30%.
●    The process of distributing and implementing vaccinations has been slow and information has been confusing and sometimes nearly non-existent. But you can go online or speak to your doctor and find out who is presently eligible and get signed up. Indiana is mainly providing vaccines by age brackets and currently, if you are 65 or older, you are eligible for the vaccine. Getting vaccinated is extremely important to create large scale immunity.
●    If vaccinations pick up and the numbers infected with the virus go down, there is hope that Trinity can return to in-person worship, possibly by mid to late Spring. The Council, Pastor Tim and the Safety Team will continue to monitor current conditions, meet to discuss plans for an eventual return to in-person worship and keep everyone informed of any updates.
●    It should be noted that Adult Education has been allowed to continue using the lower level of the education wing two days a week. They follow all the pandemic safety protocols.
●    One notice not really related to the pandemic is a problem we are periodically experiencing with the door lock on the Washington Street door. Sometimes when a code is entered, the door does not unlock. Attempts are continuing to address and correct the problem. In the meantime, if you need to go into the church building, it is recommended that you park in the parking lot and enter by the Lafayette Street door.

Wear a mask, social distance, wash hands, get vaccinated when eligible and stay safe.
